Don’t wait until you’re 80

I recently encouraged WholeBlue followers to sign up for meals from WholeBlue's delivery partner, Mama Sezz, not because I'm trying to promote someone else's business, but because of stories like the one about their founder's mother.

If you have any kind of health condition or family pre-dispostion for one, you have to read this! It's nearly unbelieveable, but 100 percent true.

In 2011, Meg Donahue, the co-founder of Mama Sezz, got the phone call none of us want to get. Her 80 year old mother, Millie, was being rushed to the hospital. Again. Although she had been an athlete and energetic all of her life, her health had been in steady decline the previous 5 years.

We often think of that as "normal aging" But read on for another way to look at it.

According to Meg, Millie's heart, which had been strong for most of her life, was failing rapidly. Her doctors said that with less than 10 percent heart function (normal is 55 to 75 percent), all that could be done was to make her comfortable.

Most people would listen to the doctor and grieve, as they waited for the end. But not Meg. She took her mom home, and unwilling to give up hope, searched for an answer. Then she came across the work of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (one of the early pioneers of whole-food, plant-based living). She followed his guidelines and changed her mom's diet.

At the time Millie had no appetite and refused most foods. Meg fed her small fruit and vegetable smoothies and soups.

After 3 months Millie appeared to get slightly better, and started walking around her little appartment. In the following few months she began to walk to the driveway and back.

In 6 months, this woman who was consigned by the doctors to die, was able to hold her baby granddaughter.

So many of us accept that we have to live with chronic disease. What if you don't have to?

There is a lot of solid research that shows that eating a whole-food, plant-based diet has a positive impact on many of the chronic diseases from which we Americans suffer. Like heart disease. Type 2 diabetes. Hypertension. Arthritis. Obesity. Chronic fatigue. Even Alzheimer's disease. Wouldn't that be the best gift ever if by this time next year your life was free from many of the shackles of these diseases? It could happen.

It did for Millie. She's now 87. It has been about six years since she was released to hospice care. She reports she feels better than when she was in her 60s.

Millie's heart function is near normal. Her cardiologist is amazed. This woman who could barely walk across a room now swims four times a week and drives. Recently, she started ukulele lessons.

If that isn't a success story, I don't know what is. I just wish I had known about all this before my parents died from the kinds of diseases I just listed. My mom didn't even make it to 80.

So what are you waiting for? If you're still breathing it's not too late to change your diet and bring yourself back to life.

I will be opening registration soon for the WholeBlue eating course where I will walk you through 10 weeks of lessons for life. These include the basics of a whole-food, plant-based diet, as well as help through the first 21-days of the diet. I'll also help you take a look at the rest of your being, your emotional and spiritual self, so you can live the fullest life possible in the time you have left.
